Services for Faculty/TAs
Mid-Quarter Feedback

Class Interview

At the faculty or TA's invitation, a facilitator from CTE will visit a class in progress and interview students about their experiences in the course.Class interviews are limited to courses with 50 students or less and can take between 20 to 45 minutes of class time. If the class is larger than 50 students or if the instructor cannot give up that amount of teaching time, there are other mid-quarter feedback options.

Scheduling a Class Interview

1. Email cte@ucsc.edu or call x9-5091 and provide the following information:
  • Course number and course title
  • Course location
  • Your name
  • Your phone number and/or email
  • Faculty or graduate student
  • Number of students
  • Class days and times
  • Your preferred dates and times
  • Specific issues to address, if any.

2. CTE will contact you after receiving your request.Option: You may provide CTE with a course syllabus ahead of time or invite the CTE facilitator to sit through some or all of the class to observe classroom dynamics.

Overview of Class Interview Process

On the day of the class interview, we recommend the instructor provide an overview of the plans for the day. For maximum student participation, CTE recommends starting the interview 5 or 10 minutes into the class. A class interview will take 20 to 45 minutes depending on size. The instructor leaves the room when the interview begins and will be called back into the class afterwards. The CTE facilitator begins by describing the feedback process and encouraging the students to think about their learning process. Students spend 5 minutes writing down responses to four questions on a form that we provide. Students then form small groups to compare responses and come to consensus on what they appreciate about the class and what recommendations to make. The CTE facilitator then invites the class to share their ideas. The facilitator will work with students to clarify their responses. Students then consider the list and indicate their level of agreement with each one on a Scantron form. The instructor returns to continue teaching after this.In about one week, CTE will mail you a copy of the report. Follow-up consultation is available if requested.
