Instructional Improvement Program Grants Available Now

The Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education, the Academic Senate Committee on Teaching, and the Center for Teaching Excellence are pleased to announce the availability of funds to seed instructional improvement initiatives at UCSC. This year a total of $90,000 will support innovation in undergraduate instruction. Grant catagories include Major Grants, Mini-Grants and Course Development Fellowships.  A new element, the "dissemination plan", has been added to the proposal process – a plan for communicating the results of research and outcomes resulting from the grant. All full-time and part-time UCSC faculty and staff may apply for Instructional Improvement Grants, either as individuals or groups. Read the 2008-09 Call for Proposals (pdf) for full details.

Reduced Service:

At the end of July, CTE Director, Ruth Harris-Barnett left the University. For over five years, Ruth led the Center for Teaching Excellence, consulting with individual staff, arranging events such as TA Orientations and the Teaching & Learning Symposia, and providing valuable insight for instructors via CTE’s Mid-Quarter Feedback program.

A search is underway for a new director. CTE programs such as Instructional Improvement Grants (mini, major, and fellowships) and Electronic Mid-Quarter Analysis of Teaching (EMAT) will continue throughout the search process. Individual consultations, workshops and symposiums, and Faculty Focus will return when a new CTE Director is hired. Please contact the Center at cte@ucsc.edu for further information.

QUOTES

No genuine educator wants simply to spread a message, or to win over the students to a particular point of view. We want the students to think for themselves. -- Peter Kenez, History

Knowledge, including self-knowledge, is a condition of freedom and control.  My teaching, like my writing, is informed and motivated by the Spinozist hope that understanding our lives can help change them, can help make us more free.

--Jerome Neu, Philosophy
