  • Writing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy
    Thursday, April 24, 12:15 – 1:15 p.m.
Bay Tree Conference Center, Muwekma Ohlone, #351
    Ruth Harris-Barnett, CTE Director

Many academic job searches now require the applicant to provide a statement of teaching philosophy, sometimes as part of a teaching portfolio. This workshop will provide a starting point for crafting a teaching statement. We’ll talk about what elements are commonly found in a statement of teaching philosophy, develop some questions to help identify your values and goals as a teacher, and explore how practice translates into philosophy. A follow-up session will be scheduled if desired.
    Co-sponsored by the Career Center.

    Putting Together a Teaching Portfolio
    Thursday, May 1, 12:15 – 1:15 p.m.
Bay Tree Conference Center, Muwekma Ohlone, #351
    Ruth Harris-Barnett, CTE Director

For those working toward a faculty career, creating a teaching portfolio can be helpful for reflecting on and documenting one’s teaching experiences, achievements, and goals. Some job searches request a teaching portfolio as part of a candidate’s materials. This workshop will describe what can go into a teaching portfolio, and how to go about selecting materials to include.
    Co-sponsored by the Career Center.

    Course Design
    Thursday, May 8, 12:15 – 1:15 p.m.
Bay Tree Conference Center, Muwekma Ohlone, #351
    Ruth Harris-Barnett, CTE Director

This workshop will explore principles of sound course design. We will address how to align course objectives, assessments, and learning activities, and the tension between “coverage” and “depth.” Participants may wish to bring ideas for a course they are currently planning or revising.
    Co-sponsored by the Career Center.
