Network and Phone Outage

April 9, 2009 To: UCSC Community Fr: UCSC Public Affairs Re: Network and phone outage A fiber optic cable near Gilroy was severed early this morning, reportedly affecting phone reception and Internet access in Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Santa Clara counties. The effect of this outage is that faculty, students, and staff who access the network from on campus will only be able to access UCSC web sites. Additionally, while on campus, email can only be sent to and received from other addresses within the UCSC network. Email and web access between UCSC and non-UCSC locations ARE impacted. We are currently accessing the impact of this outage on UCSC network-based applications. During this outage, all campus "land line" telephones--including the Blue Light emergency phones, elevator, office, and residential phones--are working. "911" emergency service is also unaffected. However, long-distance and some local land line phone service may be impacted. The campus has received no information about the expected length of this outage. This message will be posted on the UCSC home page (http://www.ucsc.edu) and updated as soon as additional information is known. For people with access to land-line phones, updated information will also be recorded on 459-INFO.
