NewsHome Directory Access Has Changed in the IC LabsRecent upgrades of campus computer systems have forced us to change the way clients of our Windows and Mac labs access their 'Home Directory'. The UCSC 'Home Directory' is the file space associated with UCSC computer accounts. Last year you had direct access to your 'Home Directory' from both the Mac and Windows Desktops - you simply clicked an icon on your desktop named 'Home Directory' and got automatic access to open, edit and save documents in your home directory. Due to incompatibilities between client and server software this simple method of accessing the 'Home Directory' is not currently working. We hope it will be working as soon as possible, but potentially it could be as late as Winter quarter. In order to provide some access to your home directory, we have replaced the non-functional automatic method with a secure file transfer program (SFTP). Accessing your files in your home directory will be different than before and it will be different between the two platforms (Mac and Windows). Importantly, note that SFTP can be used to copy files between the computer you are on and your home directory, but does not allow direct editing of files in your home directory. This means that if you copy a file to the local computer via SFTP and then make changes to it, you MUST remember to copy the changed file back to your home directory or your changes will be lost! If you need help accessing files in your home directory please feel free to ask one of our lab consultants for assistance.
Here are specific instructions for using SFTP to access your home directory: We are aware that the SFTP workaround is a substandard option to the direct home directory access methods and we are working to restore normal home directory functionality to the Windows and Mac desktop environments as soon as possible.
