About this project
Beginning in spring quarter 2008 the Library and ITS's Instructional Computing unit will be partnering to improve the way we provide lab and printing services to our common customers. Starting on March 31, 2008, the Cowell Room computer lab at the Science and Engineering Library will be supported and staffed by Instructional Computing (IC) as a trial pilot project. IC will provide printing services, software, and support similar to other IC lab locations.
What does "pilot" mean?
This project is a "pilot" service being provided for a limited and specific timeframe in order to see how well it works. This pilot service will run until the end of fall quarter 2008 at which time we will evaluate it and decide whether to put things back as they were or extend this service further. We encourage you to give us feedback by talking to the consultant on duty or by emailing ic@ucsc.edu to help us understand how well this service is working for you.
Lab hours and staffing
The Science Library lab will be staffed most of the hours that it is open. The spring and fall schedule is:
| Days | Open | Staffed |
| Monday-Thursday | 8am-11:30pm | 9am-11:30pm |
| Friday | 8am-5pm | 9am-5pm |
| Saturday | 9am-5pm | noon-5pm |
| Sunday | 10am-11:30pm | noon-11:30pm |
Software
The software in the Science Library lab is similar to the software in the rest of the IC labs. In addition, the following Library-specific software is available at this location:
- LibX Firefox Extension, UCSC edition
- EndNote Web for Word
Hardware
Macintosh side (New for Fall 2008):
- 20" Aluminum iMac
- DVD-RW/CD-RW Drive
PC side:
- Dell Optiplex 755, Intel Core 2 Duo
- 17" Sony LCD Monitor
- DVD/CD-RW Drive
Logging on
When you first sit down at a workstation in the Science Library lab you will see a login screen. If you have a UCSC account use it to login. Community members may also use the workstations by using the "library" account, see the login screen on the workstation for details.
Printing
The computers in the pilot lab support both IC's automated print billing system and the Library's card-based printing system.
If you logged onto the computer using your UCSC username and password, printing will happen in the way it happens at all IC labs: you tell the computer to print, your document comes out of the HP printer in the lab, and $0.12 per page will be charged to your University bill. Read more information about the IC printing service.
If you logged onto the computer using the "library" account, printing will happen through the Library's debit card printing system. Once you hit "Print" your document will be sent to the Print Release Station in the lab where you will insert your Slug Copy Card and select your document. The system will then debit your card $0.10/page and your document will come out of the Xerox printer in the lab. You may want to be sure to save your file with a clear name so you can easily identify your document at the release station. You can purchase or add money to a Slug Card in the Cowell Room of the Science Library. Read more information about the Library printing service.
