Computer Labs - Request Labs or Software - Lab Rental Rates NotesAll lab rentals are calculated in half-day blocks of time. The expense of starting up and shutting down a lab daily make it necessary for us to charge in these minimum half-day blocks of time. Note 1: One Time Setup Fee - $387In Summer 2002, CATS (now ITS)/Instructional Computing staff (scheduling and facilities coordinator, lab manager, technical staff, Unit director) spent approximately $28,479 worth of time working on summer lab rentals. We estimated we will spend approximately the same in Summer 2003. To recoup this amount, the $28K needs to be divided between one-time costs that occur once for each conference rental, and ongoing/daily costs, which occur each day a lab is rented. Based on our staff estimates of time spent on conferences, for a typical summer of 14 conferences spread over 367 timeblocks, we expend $5,411 of staff time on one-time costs, and $23,068 on recurring/ongoing staff time costs. If we take the $5,411 and divide by 14 conferences, we reach $387 one time fee. Note 2: IC Technical and Administrative Staff Costs - $63 per timeblockContinuing from Note 1 above, we need to recoup $23,068 for 367 timeblocks, or $63 per timeblock, based on staff hours/salaries spent on summer lab rentals. This includes tasks such as additional configuration and installation of software, repairing hardware and software on-call, preparing the lab facility, etc. Note 3: IC Student Lab Attendant-Consultant - $47.60 per timeblockWe hire student lab consultants to staff the labs for security of persons and the facility. The student summer staff consultants are paid on average $11.60 per hour. We schedule consultants for a minimum 4-hour shift (otherwise it's not worth their time to work), and therefore charge in minimum timeblocks of time. Note 4: Lab hardware, software and networking costs - $3.80 per workstation, per timeblockThe Lab Renewal Model has component costs for hardware, software, and network connections. Workstations, servers, and miscellaneous peripherals such as zip drives and scanners are included in the model. When the number of lab hours of the life of the machine is divided by the hardware, software, and network costs, the result is $3.80 per workstation, per timeblock. Note 5: Lab Room Rental - $36.00 per timeblockThis component includes costs for projection equipment, lab alarm and security systems, and facilities maintenance, as well as staff costs associated with installing and maintaining these services. These costs are $36.00 per timeblock. Note 6: Administrative Recharge FeeThe 15% Administrative Recharge fee for rentals by non-UCSC groups is charged for groups which are profit-making or have no UCSC affiliation. For example, a group such as Yo Puedo which is an off-campus group, but is a UCSC community outreach effort, would not be charged the 15% administrative fee, while a corporate group renting a lab for a private, corporate event not including UCSC students would be charged the fee. Note 7: Printing ChargesThe printing charges of $0.12 per black and white page are the same charges we have for regular UCSC students. This income is used to pay for the printers, paper, toner, printer maintenance, as well as the technical and administrative staff costs. Color printing is $0.75 per page in the Arts lab.
