Faculty Instructional Technology WorkshopsGeneral InformationThese workshops are in direct support of the faculty and TAs who need to learn about and to use modern technologies in support of their teaching. There is growing faculty interest in learning how to develop course web pages, create digital multimedia, convert slide collections to CD-ROM and deliver database information live on a web page. You can for these workshops on-line. Full details and registration confirmation will be emailed to you prior to the first session. Workshop Descriptions
Introduction to Powerpoint
A hands-on introduction to PowerPoint as a method of presenting lecture material. Powerpoint is an extremely flexible application, allowing for a wide array of presentation styles (computer display, 35mm slides, overhead transparencies, paper copy, etc.) and the capability of last minute changes. PowerPoint users can work at one of several levels of sophistication depending on their preference. Among other topics, the workshop will cover designing for legibility, using graphics, and presenting for maximum impact. Participants in the workshop will create a basic presentation and experiment with changing styles and modifying content.
Introduction to WebCT Learning Management System
This seminar focuses on faculty planning on using the WebCT web application to publish course materials. WebCT provides content and communication tools to establish discussion sessions and to create on-line tests which are graded automatically. WebCT is a tool for course content delivery and management via the Web (Internet.) With WebCT you can provide a variety of communication tools to your students that enhance communication capabilites--student-to-student or instructor-to-student. Additionally, you can track students' participation and visits to key course components. You can easily use a Mac or a PC with WebCT. For more info see the Web CT Documentation. Familiarity with how to create web pages with Dreamweaver, Word or even PowerPoint helpful. Ability to navigate local desktop and use a web browser essential. WebCT This is not a hands-on session. Orientation topics include:
WebCT—On-line Quizzes and Surveys
Looking for an efficient way to give a multiple choice quiz—AND have it automatically scored? WebCT has a built-in question database environment for you to create on-line quizzes and anonomous surveys. Options include establishing date and time limits, ability to take once or many times and to randomly deliver a select set of questions from a pool to offer up a different instrument each time. Instructors are using these tools for student self-study, mid-term and finals. Bring a sample quiz/test with you to practice with. WebCT Communication Tools
Wonder how to engage your students in WebCT? Learn how to use WebCT email, discussion, chat, and whiteboard tools to provide students with online channels for feedback and interaction. Teaching with ARTstor
ARTstor is a digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences, with a set of tools to view, present, and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes. This workshop will cover searching and saving images in ARTstor, adding your own images to your ARTstor groups, publishing folders for students to access, and presenting slideshows in ARTstor's on-line environment or in the Offline Image Viewer. Scanning Made Simple
Learn how you can turn books, papers, images, and more into digital files for use in projects like presentations, handouts, and webpages using software and equipment available at the FITC. Writing Performance (Narrative) Evaluations: Using a Software Approach
Looking for help in writing your student evaluations? Learn how to use a software approach that can help: save time, simplify record-keeping, and increase your effectiveness in drafting evaluations for large courses with the help of your TAs. The software approach, adopted by many UCSC faculty, makes use of Microsoft Word and Excel. No advance familiarity with Excel is required. Before starting, it is helpful to have your current email class list and a sample evaluation you've written. Workshops are limited to four participants. If you'd like to schedule one on one help, please contact Rebecca at 459-1573 or evals@ucsc.edu. Digitial Video Basics
This workshop is divided into two parts. We will cover input and output, software usage and term review. Podcasting will be demystified and the exploration of using video clips for instruction will be covered. Software sampled: iMovie, Camtasia, SnapsPro, and Cinematize. Digitial Audio Basics
