Virtual Computer Lab (beta)

How to connect to the Windows Virtual Lab

Read the FAQ regarding the ability to print from the Windows Virtual Lab.

  1. Install the Windows Remote Desktop Client for your computer. You need to do this only once. If you are using an Instructional Computing computer, a remote desktop client is already installed and you may proceed to Step 2.
  2. Clients:

    Windows client
    Installation instructions

    Mac OS X client
    Installation instructions - Specifications - Download

    UNIX/Linux client

  3. Launch the Windows Remote Desktop Client
    1. Windows XP: Start Menu : Programs : Accessories : Communications
    2. Windows Vista: Start Menu : All Programs : Accessories
    3. Mac: Applications / Microsoft Office 2004 / Additional Tools / Remote Desktop Connection
    4. UNIX:
      1. Login to a UNIX workstation.
      2. Select the radio button for "CDE (Common Desktop Environment)" and click OK.
      3. Right-click on the Desktop, and select Tools > Terminal. This opens a terminal session.
      4. Issue the following command:
        rdesktop -f -N -D -a 24 -z windows.ic.ucsc.edu
  4. Connect to windows.ic.ucsc.edu

  5. In order to access your local drives, the Windows Remote Desktop Client must connect them to the Windows Virtual Lab. When you choose this option, you will receive a warning. (See screenshots for Windows or Macintosh clients.) Please consult Section IV of the UC Electronic Communication Policy for your specific rights while using the Virtual Computer Labs Service.
  6. Accept the Instructional Computing Use Policy.
  7. Authenticate with your UCSC ID and password.
