Setting Dreamweaver to upload to web

Contents:

This tutorial guides users through the wizard in configuring your web site in Macromedia Dreamweaver to connect directly to your remote site on the internet. By using this option, users do NOT need to use SFTP/FTP programs such as Fugu, SSH, etc.

Note: This tutorial directly follows Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 on a PC and Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 on a Mac, but the instructions can be generally applied to all versions of Dreamweaver.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
As of August 6, 2008 server changes will require you to follow these steps to allow a connection to your course website on ic.ucsc.edu. Your past application usage will retain obsolete Remote Host Access key information preventing a connection to ic.ucsc.edu. Follow these steps to change the host key.

Note: If you are connecting for the first time, you may proceed to step one of the original tutorial.
  1. Preliminary Notes: Dreamweaver caches keys. This means Dreamweaver will continue to use the old keys that have been logged, making your SFTP connection fail. In order to remove the old keys, we must find a file called ssh_hosts (the cache file) and delete it. But don't worry, Dreamweaver will create a new cache file with the new host key the next time you connect.
  2. Run a Search for the ssh_hosts file on your hard drive to find its location. If you prefer to go to the file manually, you can find it using the following paths:

    • For PC users:
      C:\Documents and Settings\[username ]\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver [your version]\Configuration\ssh_hosts

    • For MAC users:
      Macintosh HD\Users [username]\Library\Application Support\ Macromedia\Dreamweaver [your version]\Configuration\ssh_hosts

    • Note: Replace [username] with the username you use to log into your computer and [your version] with the current installation of Dreamweaver you use.

  3. Delete the ssh_hosts file. Open up Dreamweaver and connect normally.
You will now be able to connect with the new host key.

6. You will then be asked how you want to work with your files during development. Choose the first option.

7. You will then be asked how you connect to your remote server. Choose FTP.

You must then fill in the hostname, folder on server (the home directory your site will appear under, NOT your URL, ie. "public_html/course123"), login, and password.

Uploading files to the remote site

1. Notice in the Files window on the left menu (right for MAC users), you are now under your new site name. Next to the site name you will see Local View. If you open the menu, you will see a few other options including Remote View. Remote View represents the files in the directory of your site, while Local View represents the files on your computer directory.

When updating your site, you will want to make sure you are in Local View so that you do not change the actual viewable site until ready to upload.

2. When you are ready to upload something from the local site to the remote site, click on the Expand button below the Local View menu.

(PC)
PC: Files Menu

(MAC)
MAC: Files Menu

3. You will see a screen displaying the Local Files on the right side and the Remote Site on the left side of the screen. If you are not connected to the remote site, you will be instructed to click the Connect To Remote Host button, the first button from the left. Once connected, simply drag files from the Local Files to the Remote Site to upload new or replace existing files on your remote site.

In this view you can also add/delete files and folders. To add new folders, right-click on the side you want to create the folder on, and click New Folder. To return to orginal view, click on the Collapse button, the last button on the right.
