ABOUT THE COURSE: Surveys development of concepts and methods in prehistoric archaeology, from Renaissance to present, concentrating on the English-speaking world. Lectures stress ideas and methods in archaeology in their social and historical contexts. Many readings are original documents from different phases in the history of archaeology. Students receive coaching in reading texts and writing analytic essays. Satisfies the 'W' requirement. PREREQUISITES: Introduction to Archaeology (Anthropology 3) or equivalent.
