• Hepatitis A Virus (HAV)
  • "infectious" hepatitis
    • contaminated shellfish, food and water
    • resistant to detergents, acids, and temperature <60°C
    • survives in freshwater and saltwater for many months
    • concentrated in filter feeders — shellfish
  • HAV Toxicity
    • jaundice
      • "the disease your friends diagnose"
      • coloration of skin, eyes and urine
      • =>all tissues of the body stained
        • excess bile pigments in serum
      • bile normally secreted by liver into bowel
        • necrosis of liver cells
        • consequence of immune response
    • fever, nausea, anorexia and abdominal pains
    • jaundice ~ 2 weeks
    • full recovery ~ 90% infected individuals
    • 10-15 cases / 100,00 population (US)
