ENVS 80B Assignment 1

Due at the beginning of class, Thursday, October 15

1.   In what main ways do weather and climate differ?  List the temporal scales of weather and climate.

2.   Draw a climate graph for your home town, using data from the Western Regional Climate Center (http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/Climsum.html).  If you are from a state not listed on this server, try using the “Find a Station” function from the National Climatic Data Center (http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/stationlocator.html).  If you still cannot locate data for your home town, use the Western Regional Climate Center site from above and select a location near Santa Cruz.

3.   What is the forecast for the next five days for the location you described in question 2?  List the maximum and minimum temperatures, as well as POP (probability of precipitation, if any) for the location for the next five days (do not forget to tell us which five dates.)  To find the forecast for your location, go the National Weather Service site (http://www.weather.gov/) and click on the map.

4.   Do the forecast temperatures from question 3 match the long-term temperatures from question 2?  What are some reasons to explain why they do not agree?
