Syllabus Readings Links Bibliographies
This course examines the three main periods of revolutionary upheaval --- 1789, 1830, and 1848 --- that marked France's transition to the modern era. Students will read a combination of primary and secondary sources to acquire the necessary factual background. Lectures will focus on key events and personalities as well as on themes that emerge from the comparison of the different revolutionary episodes. Students' written work will include a term paper in which they reflect upon the patterns that link these periods of rapid and often violent social change.
