Theories of History/Theories of Society

in Modern Europe

Professor Mark Traugott

Fall 2007

This intensive ten-week course examines how social theorists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have conceived of the historical process and what their perspectives have revealed about social life in the modern era. The themes explored include the need to balance the conflicting needs for social order and social change; how best to understand the relationship between the individual and the social group; and what, if any, patterns or trends govern the unfolding of history and social development.

This course carries the IH designation and fulfills the General Education requirement for an introductory course in the Humanities.
